Location
Caldetas1 or Caldas de Estrac (officially in Catalan: Caldes d'Estrac) is a municipality in the province of Barcelona, in the region of El Maresme, in the autonomous community of Catalonia, Spain. Its beginnings date back to the 13th century, built around an old hospital and a church. The location of a hot spring gave the town its name. From 1870 to 1920, Caldetes, lived a first golden age, being a summer resort of the Catalan bourgeoisie. Important Catalan poets and writers such as Apel-les Mestres, Joan Maragall, Jacinto Verdaguer or Josep Palau i Fabre, lived in the municipality. Although it is considered that the diminutive of Caldetes (applied especially to the maritime district or vila nova) was born in the eighteenth century, the name was already used in 1600, in the Geography of Catalonia by Pere Gil. During the Spanish Civil War Caldetes was considered an open city because it had several embassies within the municipality, which meant that it could not be bombed.
